geant GENUS: Virtualisation Service for GÉANT and European NRENs

Current developments and technical enhancements of transport networks’ technologies, network management and control planes, cloud computing, data repositories and high definition visualization, are driving profound transformations of NRENs’ (National Research and Education Networks) network infrastructures and their users’ capabilities. These technological advances are driving the emergence of ever more demanding highperformance and network based scientific applications such as ultra-high definition remote visualisation and networked high-performance supercomputing infrastructure [1,2,3]. As these types of collaborative and networkbased applications evolve addressing a wide range of users in NREN community, it is not feasible or scalable to setup and configure dedicated network and IT (computing and storage) resources for each application type or category. Consequently, NRENs need to deploy an infrastructure management mechanism able to optimally support all application types, each with their own access, network and IT resource usage patterns. A key challenge for NREN community on addressing this issue is efficient and application/user driven network and IT resource utilization and sharing within their current and future infrastructure.
