Managing information security while enabling communities

We live in the age of information, information with many different facets. We send off information, we receive it, we allow others to access information on our servers, and we access information on the servers of other organisations. Information is an essential part of any community and essential in enabling communities. Given the importance of information, how do we know that the information we receive have not been tampered with, that confidential information we send to another organisation will be kept confidential, and that the information we need are available when we need it?
