Circuits vs. Packets, 5 Years Later

At TNC 2006 in Catania, there was a lively round-table discussion on circuit- and packet-oriented architectural strategies for research networks. Five years later, the research and education networking community still struggles with the question of which architectural direction(s) to take. We try to frame the debate in somewhat precise terms, and review some of the arguments in light of recent developments both in the research networking community and in the larger global context of telecommunications and computing. Finally, we suggest some approaches from the connectionless side with the potential for research and education networks to both improve service to their constituencies and to actively participate in industrywide innovation.
